Through our own study and experiences, we found that many professionals and allied health workers are in the dark or unaware of the protocols involved when it comes to interacting and servicing CWDs (Children with Disabilities) and/or PWDs (Persons with Disabilities). World Mental Health Day is observed on 10 October every year, with the overall objective of raising awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilising efforts in support of mental health. Mental Health is a person’s psychological – social wellbeing. This includes how we manage stress, emotions, actions, thinking, learning and relating to people. The subject of mental health has always been a misconception where the society has been given the impression that mental health is used to label those who have mental disorders. The term mental disorder describes one who has mental issues that requires consistent medical assistance. We celebrated the annual World Mental Health Day by organising a festival with the theme "A Kaleidoscope of Minds" on 13 October 2018 at Suria Sabah Shopping Mall. The 6th sensory friendly movie for individuals with disabilities and their families is back! It was held at Golden Screen Cinemas, Suria Sabah Shopping Mall with 88 seats. Sensory-friendly screenings are intended to provide space and opportunity for individuals who have sensory processing disorders to watch a movie in an environment that is sensitive to their needs. Sensory Processing Disorder or SPD is a term used when one is hypersensitive to various stimuli such as sound, smells, lights, different textures, crowded places and so on. Dream Blossom is a social engagement project organised by a collective group of artists and curators called "Warm Hands" - an initiative of TOTAL Museum of Contemporary Art, South Korea. <Dream Blossom by Warm Hands> is a member of the People's Participation Public Diplomacy Program, which is supported by the Korea Foundation. In collaboration with SAC3 (Sabah Animation & Creative Content Centre), Dream Blossom by Warm Hands conducted six workshops with our trainees from Puzzle Prints Sheltered Workshop, which resulted in an exhibition showcasing their beautiful creations. On 18 August 2018, we organised a Digital Art Workshop (Everyone Can Draw) in partnership with Majlis Perkhidmatan Masyarakat Sabah (MPMS) and Asgardian School of Art for persons with and without disabilities at Sabah Art Gallery. The objectives of this workshop are to (1) promote social inclusion through art; and (2) train, expand and improve the potentials and skill sets of young individuals. Autism Initiatives Malaysia (AIM) held their First Symposium "Transitioning to Further Education and Employment" on 13 - 14 July 2018 at JW Marriott Kuala Lumpur. AIM acts as a catalyst in the autism spectrum service landscape, shifting from early childhood intervention to a focus on adults. AIM is committed to empowering adults with autism spectrum condition through self-advocacy and citizen advocacy, further education and employment, mental health and well-being. We heard from close to 30 speakers - international and local experts, passionate parents and practitioners through plenary sessions and practical workshops. The Symposium provided a platform for people to connect and share experiences and ideas in an empathetic and connected environment. With both international and national expertise, the Symposium offered hope to the community as they continue to research what has been achieved in other countries, showcase existing models, share success stories within Malaysia, and provide support and inspiration to teens and adults with autism spectrum condition and their families. ...
