Walk For Autism Sabah 2014

Autism is globally, the fastest growing serious developmental disorder. Creating awareness on Autism is crucial, and family support groups, early intervention, classroom and one on one teaching using Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) and Picture Exchange Communication System (PECs) are some of the support and/or services that can assist people with Autism reach their highest potential. On December 18th, 2007, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution 62/139 tabled by the state of Qatar, which declared April 2nd World Autism Awareness Day. Walk for Autism (WFA) is an annual event held globally in the month of April. The Walk is not limited to Kota Kinabalu, but to all towns/districts of Sabah. It is open not only to parents and persons with autism, but to the public in general including all schools, universities and colleges, government and non- government organisations and all interested individuals and groups. As part of our 2010 awareness programs, Persatuan C.H.I.L.D. Sabah carried out an “East Coast Autism Awareness Drive” to Tawau and Lahad Datu, Sabah from 13th to 17th March 2010. More than forty parents and siblings of children with autism from Kota Kinabalu took part in this journey of awareness into autism. Dialogue: Benefits of The ‘OKU’ Card

Persatuan C.H.I.L.D. Sabah organised a dialogue session with regards to the Orang Kurang Upaya (OKU) card. The objective of the dialogue was to introduce the card and its benefits to parents and members of the community. An on-the-spot registration drive was also carried out with the help of Jabatan Perkhidmatan Kebajikan Am (JPKA) staff and volunteer doctors. It was successfully attended by more than one hundred participants. Jabatan Perkhidmatan Kebajikan Am presented a paper. There was also a question and answer session. It was voiced out that more sessions such as this need to be organised so that parents will be able to meet with JPKA officers and discuss certain issues pertaining to the card and its benefits.  ...
