Training of Trainers 2019

First Sabah Regional Training of Trainers of Disability Equality Training Sabah’s first regional Trainers for Disability Equality Training course was held at Lintas Platinum Hotel from 26 August until 6 September 2019. The ten-day course was organised by Sabah Council of Social Services (Majlis Perkhidmatan Masyarakat Sabah) together with Persatuan CHILD Sabah, and supported by Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat Malaysia. The course saw the participation of twelve (12) persons with impairments to become potential Disability Equality Training trainers. The objective of the course, facilitated by Fariz Abd Rani and Puan Nurulhuda Zainal was to equip the new trainers to understand the Social Model of Disability through a participatory learning approach. The module was created by Dr Kenji Kuno, senior advisor on Social Security (Disability) for Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to prepare participants to become effective trainers who will educate the public on creating an inclusive society by removing socially constructed barriers. Walk For Autism Sabah 2019

CHILD Sabah organised the fifth and last Walk for Autism Sabah on 3 August 2019 at Perdana Park, Tanjung Aru, Sabah. The event took place on a Saturday, commencing at four where activities such as the Tamu, Tunnel of Knowledge and Sunset Concert were ongoing up until eight at night. The Walk was flagged off by Minister of Health and People’s Wellbeing, YB Datuk Frankie Poon, and saw more than 1,000 walkers, comprising children and adults with disabilities, together with their families. This is Walk for Autism Sabah's fifth year running upon its induction in 2014 that was aimed to establish a platform for people to come together and accept Autism as a whole. The slogan for this year is ‘Moving Towards Inclusion’. Through our own study and experiences, we found that many professionals and allied health workers are in the dark or unaware of the protocols involved when it comes to interacting and servicing CWDs (Children with Disabilities) and/or PWDs (Persons with Disabilities). World Mental Health Day is observed on 10 October every year, with the overall objective of raising awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilising efforts in support of mental health. Mental Health is a person’s psychological – social wellbeing. This includes how we manage stress, emotions, actions, thinking, learning and relating to people. The subject of mental health has always been a misconception where the society has been given the impression that mental health is used to label those who have mental disorders. The term mental disorder describes one who has mental issues that requires consistent medical assistance. We celebrated the annual World Mental Health Day by organising a festival with the theme "A Kaleidoscope of Minds" on 13 October 2018 at Suria Sabah Shopping Mall. The 6th sensory friendly movie for individuals with disabilities and their families is back! It was held at Golden Screen Cinemas, Suria Sabah Shopping Mall with 88 seats. Sensory-friendly screenings are intended to provide space and opportunity for individuals who have sensory processing disorders to watch a movie in an environment that is sensitive to their needs. Dream Blossom Project

Dream Blossom is a social engagement project organised by a collective group of artists and curators called "Warm Hands" - an initiative of TOTAL Museum of Contemporary Art, South Korea. <Dream Blossom by Warm Hands> is a member of the People's Participation Public Diplomacy Program, which is supported by the Korea Foundation. In collaboration with SAC3 (Sabah Animation & Creative Content Centre), Dream Blossom by Warm Hands conducted six workshops with our trainees from Puzzle Prints Sheltered Workshop, which resulted in an exhibition showcasing their beautiful creations. On 18 August 2018, we organised a Digital Art Workshop (Everyone Can Draw) in partnership with Majlis Perkhidmatan Masyarakat Sabah (MPMS) and Asgardian School of Art for persons with and without disabilities at Sabah Art Gallery.
