Walk For Autism Sabah 2014

Autism is globally, the fastest growing serious developmental disorder. Creating awareness on Autism is crucial, and family support groups, early intervention, classroom and one on one teaching using Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) and Picture Exchange Communication System (PECs) are some of the support and/or services that can assist people with Autism reach their highest potential. On December 18th, 2007, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution 62/139 tabled by the state of Qatar, which declared April 2nd World Autism Awareness Day. Walk for Autism (WFA) is an annual event held globally in the month of April. The Walk is not limited to Kota Kinabalu, but to all towns/districts of Sabah. It is open not only to parents and persons with autism, but to the public in general including all schools, universities and colleges, government and non- government organisations and all interested individuals and groups. "Journeys: Autism & Adolescence" took place on 23rd April 2009 (Thursday) at Dewan Hospital Mesra Bukit Padang, Sabah. Adolescence can be a difficult time for children and their parents. A diagnosis on the autism spectrum can make the journey harder and more complex. Adolescence is a time of transitions and change.  Anyone who has a child or student with Autism knows that transitions are when problems are most likely to emerge.  Adolescence is one of the biggest transitions in a person's life.  This seminar focuses on issues surrounding adolescence for children with Autism. The main objective is to help parents and teachers understand and manage these challenging years in the child's journey into adulthood. As part of our 2010 awareness programs, Persatuan C.H.I.L.D. Sabah carried out an “East Coast Autism Awareness Drive” to Tawau and Lahad Datu, Sabah from 13th to 17th March 2010. More than forty parents and siblings of children with autism from Kota Kinabalu took part in this journey of awareness into autism. 2nd April is World Autism Day – Persatuan C.H.I.L.D. Sabah supported it by being part of “Autism Speaks" Awareness on Autism – that was participated by organisations around the world. The following message was published in the local newspapers: Today is World Autism Day World Autism Awareness Day, 2 April 2009 On 18th December 2007, the United Nations General Assembly declared April 2nd as World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD). This UN resolution is one of only three official disease-specific United Nations Days, and it brings the world's attention to autism, a pervasive disorder that affects tens of millions. The resolution aims to raise awareness about autism throughout society and to encourage early diagnosis and early intervention. East Coast Autism Awareness Drive – Sandakan and Ranau

As part of its 2009 awareness programs, Persatuan C.H.I.L.D. Sabah organised an “East Coast Autism Awareness Drive” to Ranau and Sandakan, Sabah from 14th to 17th March 2009. More than forty parents and siblings of children with autism from Kota Kinabalu took part in this journey of awareness into autism. The objective of this drive is to promote awareness into autism – which is still very much lacking in many parts of Sabah. In Ranau, Jabatan Perkhidmatan Kebajikan Am Sabah supported the move by sending their community-based rehabilitation (PDK) workers and parents to attend the talk that was held at the Ranau Rest House. In Sandakan, the awareness talk was held at Sabah Hotel and was co-organised with the Early Intervention Centre (Sabah Cheshire Home, Sandakan). Dialogue: Benefits of The ‘OKU’ Card

Persatuan C.H.I.L.D. Sabah organised a dialogue session with regards to the Orang Kurang Upaya (OKU) card. The objective of the dialogue was to introduce the card and its benefits to parents and members of the community. An on-the-spot registration drive was also carried out with the help of Jabatan Perkhidmatan Kebajikan Am (JPKA) staff and volunteer doctors. It was successfully attended by more than one hundred participants. Jabatan Perkhidmatan Kebajikan Am presented a paper. There was also a question and answer session. It was voiced out that more sessions such as this need to be organised so that parents will be able to meet with JPKA officers and discuss certain issues pertaining to the card and its benefits.  ...
